M Group Services’ Telecom Division nominated at Connected Britain Awards 2024 9th September 2024

Across M Group Services’ Telecom Division, we are delighted to have been shortlisted for two awards at the Connected Britain Awards 2024.

The Connected Britain Awards recognise the most significant and innovative organisations, solutions and programmes that are shaping Britain’s digital future.

Our first nomination is for Magdalene, a part of our Division, for ‘The Industrial Innovation Award’. Earlier this year, Magdalene secured National Grid’s 12-year managed services contract for its Operational telecommunication network technology.

Working to transform National Grid’s Operational Telecom (OpTel) infrastructure from an SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) based network, to a modern IP (Internet Protocol) based network, Magdalene worked with key technology providers to introduce a system concept which comprised of IP based technology.

All aspects of the MPLS-TP-based solution were successfully tested with National Grid, including the transformation process, resulting in a pass for this key tender aspect. Magdalene secured the contract award, with the broader responsibilities of the managed service.

Our second shortlisting is for ‘The Sustainability Award’, for our commitment to implement multiple decarbonisation initiatives over the last 12 months. In 2023, we launched our decarbonisation strategy, which focuses on delivering a 42% reduction in Scope 1 (direct) and 2 (indirect) emissions by 2030 and 52% in Scope 3 (supply chain) economic intensity by 2030.

Initiatives introduced include the use of a solar and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel-powered generator at the Leyland training centre, which has so far saved 28TCO2e. We are also supporting our staff in installing Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers at their home address through subsidising installation costs and providing EV fuel cards to access UK-wide public charge points. This has resulted in our number of EV and hybrid vehicles rising by 72% from 562 to 968.

Understanding that we need to raise awareness of our 2030 targets, we have also introduced an environmental training module, which builds our colleagues' knowledge around the environmental aspect and impacts of their work.

These initiatives, alongside our ongoing commitment to reduce waste to landfill, have so far resulted in a 17.2% reduction in carbon intensity.

Congratulations to everyone shortlisted at the Connected Britain Awards and we look forward to celebrating with you in London! If you would like to find out more about our Telecoms Division, please visit us on stand 79 on the 11 and 12 September.
