Meet two of Magdalene's Junior Engineers. 9th December 2021

Magdalene’s Installation & Commissioning Team cover a range of projects across the UK and in August 2021, Mick Harhoff (Head of Field Services) and his supervisors, Scott Thomas and Russ Ledwood, committed to the training and development of two Junior Engineers within the team. Starting their Junior Engineer careers working on the Telefonica Ad-Hoc project, Adam Smith and Liam Kearney will broaden their knowledge and skillsets by completing six month instalments across all of Magdalene’s I&C workstreams, working to a fast paced, in depth three-year training plan.

Meet Adam Smith.

What role did you carry out prior to this?

I started working for Magdalene in 2016 as a Logistics Coordinator in the warehouse in St Ives. At the start of 2020 I was promoted to Warehouse Supervisor, running the warehouse and supervising a team of Warehouse Operatives and Drivers.

Why did you choose a career as a Junior Engineer?

Seeing the I&C Supervisors in the MIC carry out their tasks and hearing what they do on site made me decide that becoming a Telecom Engineer was the career for me.

Why did you want to get into the telecom industry?

I had previously worked in Logistics for another company and the idea of a fast-paced, ever growing industry appealed to me. I also wanted to progress in my career in this field of work.

What are your career aspirations / where do you see yourself progressing in the next 2-3 years over the course of your training plan?

I see myself completing the training programme and becoming a competent and confident Lead Telecom Engineer. After this, I would look to train from other Supervisors in the business and hopefully become an I&C Supervisor in the future.

Meet Liam Kearney

What role did you carry out prior to this?

Before working for Magdalene, I was in the Royal Navy serving as an underwater warfare specialist (basically tracking submarines) which sounds a lot more interesting than it was. It was a lot of sitting around just looking at a screen. I served four years and managed to travel to some amazing places such as Iceland, Dubai, Germany, Estonia to name a few. I felt like four years was the right time for me and was seeking a new challenge.

Why did you choose a career as a Junior Engineer?

I wanted to become a Junior Engineer as the role suited me brilliantly because I didn’t have experience in telecom and this three-year training programme helps me learn all aspects of the telecom sector.

Why did you want to get into the telecom industry?

I wanted to get into the telecom industry because I know a lot of ex-military go into telecom and quite a lot of lads I served with all went across so speaking to them and getting guidance definitely helped me in my decision. Also, how much telecom as an industry are increasing there is always going to be work, just looking at Magdalene and how much just this company has grown over the recent years and will keep growing.

What are your career aspirations / where do you see yourself progressing in the next 2-3 years over the course of your training plan?

In three years’ time I see myself completing the training programme and being a competent, confident and all round well trained telecom engineer. Then in years to come to keep working hard and moving up and gaining promotion.
